Wednesday, 11 December

We were up pretty early today. First stop was the local post office: I mailed all our US postcards for $1.10 each (it's $2.55 from Oz!) and bought a card to send to Jenny for her 40th Birthday.

We headed north on snow-covered roads which had been salted, into Mennonite country and stopped at a farm where Dianne and Steve buy some of their organic vegies. When we went inside we met Miriam and her daughter, Emma. I was introduced and after a bit of a chat they actually invited us into the house to see the quilt Miriam has on the frame at the moment – it’s for Emma: it was exquisite. Apparently she will get nine quilts when she marries. Such an honour to be invited to walk through their home and see the wonderful kitchen with its wood stove.

Next stop was Pfennings where we bought some more vegies, then on to Mae’s Teas where we had coffee, sitting watching the snow fall outside. With each new location, you get used to jumping out of the car, pulling your gloves on, jacket around you and running through the driving wind into the warm buildings, kicking the snow of your boots at the door. Then with purchases on hand it’s back to the car, bang your boots together to shake off the snow and quickly close the door before too much blows in.

This is an open carriage and it's about -9 out there!

We had a lovely hot lunch at Annie Mae's, a Mennonite cafe and then lots of stops at different farms for different produce. This is all that they will put away for the winter; combined with the summer harvest bottling and canning, they have enough food to see them through to the beginning of spring.

Tonight we had some Aussie wine and cheese, followed by a light meal including fresh lettuce just pulled in the greenhouse on this farm, fresh beetroot (beets) and Steve’s home made soup.

Right now it’s -12 outside, with a wind chill factor taking it to -21. Tomorrow we’ll be going to a Christmas tree farm to chop down Steve and Dianne’s tree, bring it home and decorate it and then we’re going to the musical, “White Christmas”.  We checked out the temperature today in the place 3.5 hours north where we’re heading on Sunday: -22! But it will be getting warmer while we’re there.
